Subbuteo

sport

In the latest instalment of our regular series Beautiful Games, we get all nostalgic with these specially-crafted Subbuteo figures made by enthusiast Terry Lee. Using body parts salvaged from crushed players and with kit details painstakingly hand-painted, each model takes up to two days to create. The resulting figures, which depict classic moments from footballing history such as Roger Milla’s corner-flag celebration and Diego Maradona’s ‘hand of God’, are located within original Subbuteo stadiums and, of course, set on the undulating Astroturf that was the bane of every young Subbuteo fan’s life.

Scoring High – FRANCE

ATELIER DU PONT

Créteil, France, Ligne de but

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

To gain official approval, Duvauchelle football stadium in Créteil needed changing rooms and a 300-seat stand, which have now been completed. Making use of the height difference between two pieces of land, the changing rooms are located underground and consequently merge into the greenery of this part of Créteil. The stand comprises an extruded concrete block, which bears a fleeting resemblance to a laptop and on which the yellow plastic seats are soberly lined up. The stand’s rear and the underside of its roof have been dressed in the same metal mesh. Accessible to spectators via a hanging walkway, the rear façade allows views over activities on the adjacent sports grounds (tennis, athletics, etc.).
Precision and technical expertise are fundaments of both architecture and sport, and are here combined in elegant simplicity. The contrast between solid concrete and transparent metal mesh brings a frankness and a sensibility that complement both the virility and the poetry of sporting events.
Beneath the stand, the changing rooms are styled in the noble Brutalist tradition of concrete undersides. Through their high vaults and the shafts of light that penetrate from above, they evoke a kind of Postmodern cathedral dedicated to new passions and new heroes.

Miss Reef – Argentina

Reef’s twenty-five year heritage traces back to two brothers from Argentina, Fernando and Santiago “Santi” Aguerre. Fueled by their passion for surfing, and armed with a unique entrepreneurial spirit, the brothers acted on an idea to create a high quality, comfortable, active lifestyle sandal. Attracted to the Southern California lifestyle, Santi moved to California in the early 80′s and would shortly be reunited with his brother. Fernando graduated from Law School, and headed to La Jolla to help co-found Reef. With $4000 working capital, hard work, dedication and some savvy marketing ideas, the brothers built Reef into the #1 sandal brand.

Fernando and Santiago knew they had a great product, but they wanted to separate themselves from the other surf companies. Inspired by the notoriously beautiful women of the beaches in South America, the brothers saw an opportunity to introduce the surf market to an exotic element that they called Miss Reef. Never revealing her face or identity, the brothers used the intrigue of Miss Reef to help convey their idea of the surf lifestyle. The first advertisement involving Miss Reef was rejected from the surfing magazines for the controversial content, but after some convincing, the ads finally ran. The surfers who read the magazines were instantly intrigued by the exotic and beautiful figure in the ads. Since then, Miss Reef has become a global icon of the surfing community. She has remained an integral component of Reef’s DNA, and can easily be attributed to the success of Reef.

Now twenty-five years later, the company is thriving as one of the leading surf brands in the world offering footwear for guys, girls and kids. Reef has evolved from its humble sandal beginnings to now include a men’s apparel division launched in 2003, followed by the launch of girl’s swim and apparel in 2008. Reef also recently launched Reef Redemption; a program intended to lessen our footprint on the Environment. Reef Redemption initiatives thrive through a product series using green technology, our culture of giving and our in-house efforts to work towards a more environmentally friendly work environment.

Through all the change over the past twenty-five years, Reef is driven by the same constant – we are surfers at heart, drawing influences from the world around us. We still stand for the same foundation that the company was founded on by Fernando and Santi back in 1984. Reef is a core surf company. We create authentic and innovative products intended to nurture an incredibly fortunate lifestyle that involves surf, sensuality and a life filled with happiness.

London 2012 camping initiative – London

Camping at the Games using sports clubs around capital to provide Olympic fans and volunteers place to stay from £10

Very few things connected to the Olympics could conceivably be called a bargain. In the circumstances then, a night’s accommodation for £10 – albeit under canvas and well into London‘s suburbs – might just about qualify.

That is the deal offered by a company, Camping at the Games, which has teamed up with a series of sports clubs around London and further afield to offer Olympic spectators an alternative to the wallet-lightening rates currently available at the capital’s few remaining hotel rooms.

With a nightly charge of £10 an adult and £5 a child, more if you use one of their pre-erected tents, the company will have 3,000 pitches available each night, enough for up to 10,000 people.

Despite a launch photocall on Monday near Tower Bridge none of the six sports grounds-turned campsites are not quite so central. Dotted around east, south-east and north-east London, as far as Enfield, they all, however, promise straightforward travel connections. One, in Waltham Forest, is billed as being just a 15 minute bus ride from the Olympic Park. Outside the capital, one is in Reading, close to the rowing lake, one further north of London is close to the canoeing venue, while there are two in Weymouth for sailing fans.

All but two of the 10 sites are also open for the Paralympics.

The company is particularly targeting Olympic volunteers – some of whom are working fairly erratic and last-minute shifts – offering the chance to change their accommodation date and venue at no extra cost. There are dedicated volunteer-only sections as well.

One of the company’s founders, Rhian Evans, said Monday’s popup campsite in Potters Field Park, near Tower Bridge, was intended to “show people who were put off by accommodation prices that there is an affordable alternative”.

He said: “The price of staying in London over the summer is extortionate but on our campsites a family of four can stay for £30 a night. Even staying in a budget hotel will cost a lot of money this summer and our campsites will have an Olympic atmosphere.

“We’re also helping sports clubs by setting up these campsites on club grounds which will help raise funds for them. The grounds provide lots of space so people won’t be crammed in, like in a festival.”
